【摘要】:ThispracticeprovidesgeneralprinciplesfortheapplicationoftheTime-of-FlightDiffractionTechniqueasatoolfordetectionandsizingofdiscontinuities.TOFDisanondestructiveultrasonicexaminationtechniquethatisnotbasedonamplituderesponse.However,sufficientsensitivityisrequiredtoidentifyindicationsforevaluation.Techniquesusedaretypicallyappliedtoweldedjointsincarbonsteelbuttheprinciplesmaybeapplicabletootherapplicationsincludingothermaterialswithsuitablevalidationproceduresagreeabletothecontractingparties.Inadditiontoastand-aloneultrasonicdetectiontechniqueTOFDmaybeusedinconjunctionwithweldexaminationssuchasthosedescribedinPracticesE164andE1961whereitmaybeusedtoimprovesizingestimatesofflawsdetectedbythemanualormechanizedpulse-echotechniquesandhelpdiscriminatebetweenflawsandgeometricreflectors.Thetechniquehasproveneffectiveonthicknessesfrom9to300mm[0.375to12in.].TOFDhasbeenusedonthicknessesoutsideofthisrangebutspecialconsiderationsarenecessary.Techniquesdevelopedoutsideofthisrangeofthicknessshallbedemonstratedascapableofmeetingtherequireddetectionandsizingrequirementsofthespecificationused.1.1ThispracticeestablishestherequirementsfordevelopingultrasonicexaminationproceduresusingtheultrasonictechniqueknownasTime-of-FlightDiffraction(TOFD).1.2ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Inch-poundunitsareprovidedforinformation.1.3ConsistentwithASTMPolicy,TOFDmayberegardedasanultrasonictestmethodwherebythequalitiesandcharacteristicsoftheitemtestedareevaluated,measuredandinsomecasesidentified.Measurementsmaybesubjecttoprecisionandbiasthatmaybedeterminedstatisticallyorasafunctionofsomeparameter(s)suchaswavelength.Thispracticemaybeusedforapplicationsthatwouldbequalitativeandproperlyaddressedasexaminationsaswellasquantitativeandmoreproperlyaddressedastests.1.4Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
